The Autistic Way is a registered charity, set up by a group of parents who had children with autism and nowhere to go for help and advise. These parents formed a committee and fundraised enough money to open a respite centre in Great Yarmouth called Smart Kids ok!
In 2001 Smart Kids OK! opened, a unique play centre for children with autism, a place where families can leave their children to have fun and play, whilst parents earn a well deserved break. Not only is Smart Kids a respite centre but a place where parents/carers can come for advise, support and training.
Autism is a life-long disability with no cure placing a great deal of stress on the whole family. Autism is a pervasive disorder which affects every minute of every day of a young persons life along with their family members. At Smart Kids we support the whole family including the siblings. Autism affects a young persons social and communication skills leaving them to view the world in a very fragmented way, experiencing isolation, fear, confusion and stress.
Smart Kids has a fantastic indoor play area with a trampoline, bouncy castle, computers, ball pool, sensory room, art room and garden. Our aim is to see the children who attend Smart Kids have a smile on their face, have fun and learn to socialise as well as learn important life skills.
Smart Kids is a non-profit making charity. Running costs of this play centre is extremely high, staff to child ratio needs to be very high as many children need one to one supervision. Toys continually need to be updated and replaced and our rent has just been increased. It is a constant struggle to keep this centre running and we appreciate any help we can get.
